Abstract


The paper presents analyses on the link between education and sustainable development in the context of the social development of the regions and the role of education in social cohesion. Contemporary trends and challenges to the system of higher education are discussed, as well as the prospects for its development in Bulgaria. The good practices of University of agribusiness and rural development are taken as an example on which basis important conclusions are made and new insights are provided in the functioning of a contemporary university oriented towards students and outer environment and focusing on the impact on sustainable development of rural regions.
