State and trends in the banking sector in Central and Eastern Europe

Abstract
The paper aims to discuss the status and trends in the banking sector in Central and Eastern Europe. By using a system of specific indicators, the changes in financial condition and financial performance of banks, operating in the region over the past three years, are analyzed. The following tasks are presented in the study: analyzing the dynamics of the banking assets of CEE countries for the period 2011-2013; tracking changes in the relative shares of banking assets to GDP of the CEE countries for the period 2011- 2013; assessing changes in return on assets and equity of commercial banks in the CEE countries for 2011-2013; examination of changes in the rate of lending to the banking sector in CEE countries for 2011-2013; and analyzing changes in capital adequacy and quality of the loan portfolios of banking institutions operating in the CEE countries for the same period.
