With its common culture and history, Europe is also characterized by its many borders. Different policies on both sides of the border, notably in the areas of law, governance, taxation, economy, culture and social affairs, have helped to transform state borders into real barriers between countries. The EU is the first and most typical example of a large institutionalized space where integration processes are particularly strong and the leading role of regional policy and regional development.
