Flood hazard to the town Veliko Tarnovo was evaluated based on a comprehensive approach to assessing flood risk which was developed by Cyril and St. Methodius University of Veliko Tarnovo as part of the implementation of one of the main action of the Project "Joint Risk Monitoring during Emergencies in the Danube Area", financed of the Romania – Bulgaria Cross-Border Cooperation Programme 2007-2013. The suggested general approach for assessment and mapping of the flood risk integrates the risk assessment theoretical frameworks presented in a number of documents of the European Commission regarding risk mapping and assessment, the requirements of the EU 2007/60/EO Directive by the European Parliament and Council of 23 October 2007 regarding flood risk assessment and management, as well as a number of European good practices in the field.
